Ενίσχυση της ράχης, στην άνω και την κάτω πλευρά της, στερεωμένη στο εσωτερικό των τευχών. Αποτελείται από κλωστές που τυλίγονται και πλέκονται γύρω από ένα υποστήριγμα που είναι φτιαγμένο από εύκαμπτο υλικό. Για τη διακόσμηση του κεφαλαριού χρησιμοποιούνται χρωματιστές κλωστές (μεταξωτές ή λινές). Σε ιστορικές βιβλιοδεσίες το κεφαλάρι μπορεί να στερεώνεται και στις πινακίδες. Το κεφαλάρι μπορεί να είναι μια πλεγμένη εκ των προτέρων ενίσχυση που επικολλάται στην άνω και την κάτω πλευρά της ράχης του σώματος του βιβλίου.
It is used as strengthening/ reinforcement of the upper and lower part of the spine, fixed in the inner part of the fold of the gatherings. It consists of threads, sewn around a support made of a flexible material. Colored threads (silk or linen) can be used for the decoration of the endbands. In historical bindings, the endbands can be attached on the boards. The endband could also be a pre-sewn reinforcement that is affixed to the upper and lower side of the spine of the textblock.
